The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba distributed a $4,000 grant to Virtuosi Concert Manitoba, Inc. in support of their “Hebraic Inspiration” concert. The chamber music programme is comprised of Jewish and Hebraic-influenced works, featuring Canadian artists Alexandre DaCosta (violin), Matt Herskowitz (piano) and Denise Djokic (cello). The programme is comprised of five works: Ernest Block: Suite for Solo Cello; John Williams: Suite Schindler’s List for violin and piano; Ernest Block: Hebraic Suite for violin and piano; Jerry Block: If I Were a Rich Man (from Fiddler on the Roof) and Felix Mendelssohn: Trio in D Minor, in Four Movements.

The concert was held at the University of Winnipeg’s Eckhardt-Gramatte Hall on March 28, 2009 as part of its Virtuosi Concert series for the 2008-2009 year.

Harry Strub, Executive Director of Virtuosi Concert Manitoba, Inc. believes that this project will meet a need in Winnipeg’s Jewish community. “This programme will fill a cultural gap in serious music programming,” says Strub. “Virtuosi Concert Manitoba will also be able to raise community awareness of the importance of Jewish historical traditions in the world of chamber music – the highest musical art form.”
