On May 21, 2009 the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba attended the official
re-opening of the West End Cultural Centre. The Foundation provided a $10,000 grant towards the redevelopment of the Centre.
The West End Cultural Centre began in 1987 when a group of folk-music enthusiasts established a not-for-profit organization with a mission to present music outside of the mainstream, to support emerging artists and to provide opportunities for citizens to be involved in the arts. In 2003, structural engineers informed the West End Cultural Centre that there were major problems for the 95-year-old building, a former church, that could no longer be avoided. After an exhaustive fundraising and design process, the result is a beautifully refurbished building that is structurally sound and environmentally sustainable (surpassing all standards for a LEED Gold building), has increased capacity and is able to offer improved programming and patron facilities.
The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba is pleased to be part of the redevelopment of the West End Cultural Centre, adding to the renewal process being undertaken in one of Winnipeg’s oldest neighbourhoods. |
